In this weeks readings, there was a large amount of drama and suspense. The books were enticing to me because they seemed like something you would watch in a movie. In the stories, the drama would build up out of nowhere leaving the reader amidst a large amount of suspense and then finally a totally unexpected ending.
In "A Goodman is Hard to Find," I totally did not expect for the whole family to be killed like that. The author did foreshadow it though when she pointed out the fact that she wore a nice dress incase the family got in a car accident and she died. In "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been," I definitely did not expect Arnold Fiend to be an old creepy man dressed in a mask, in order to trick Connie into coming with him.
In all I enjoyed the short stories for their unique plots that keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
I definitely agree with the degree of suspense each of these stories possessed. In "A Good Man is Hard to Find", I assumed someone would be killed because of the foreshadowing technique, but I too, didn't think the whole family was going to be murdered. I guess in my mind, I figured that someone would have to be spared because there was a baby with them. Both of these stories did a great job of instilling fear in the reader.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the suspense in these stories made them good reads. I didn't expect the family to be killed either, and like you said it was foreshadowed in the beginning when the Grandma talks about how if she dies, she wants people to know she is a "lady." Learning about the authors religious background helped clarify why religion was a dominant part in the story. Though the stories were both suspenseful, I will say that I was quite depressed after reading both of them as a family is killed and then a girl is raped and most likely killed. Not the best stories to read before going to bed.
ReplyDeleteI agree that these books were very suspenseful, in fact I think they may have been the two most suspenseful books we read all summer. While they all had a little action, the ending was either really predictable or the climax wasn't enough to give a feeling of suspense. I also agree with Justin that they were very depressing books. Also, since we had just watched A Street Car Named Desire, when the girl was raped I immediately thought back to the scene where Blanche was raped.
